  • What is the MissionFish deduction?

  • As a registered charity (No. 1110538), MissionFish aims to cover its costs by retaining part of the donations it receives. We have no shareholders and any surpluses we generate are reinvested in fulfilling our charitable purposes, either by issuing grants to UK charities or by investing in our services for those charities.
  • Our costs and deductions are set out in detail below. Please note that MissionFish does not charge:
  • Any set-up fee or annual subscription fee to charities for registering with MissionFish to receive donations
  • Any fees to Charity Direct Sellers for using eBay for Charity
  • Any additional card fees, transaction fees or VAT on top of our deductions
  • Costs we incur

  • The majority of our costs are incurred in helping to develop and deliver the technology behind eBay for Charity, and to provide legal and financial infrastructure that makes it possible.
  • Amongst other expenses, we incur costs in:
  • Vetting charities that wish to register for eBay for Charity, and maintaining and enhancing the charity functions and information on eBay marketplaces.
  • Helping to design and manage fundraising campaigns for charities and donors to maximise the amount they raise on eBay.
  • Collecting, processing, accounting for and passing on over 1 million donations every year to thousands of UK charities.
  • Claiming Gift Aid, including the extensive compliance and audit requirements of HMRC.
  • Providing customer support and advice to charities and to donors to ensure their fundraising is successful.
  • Helping charities manage their use of eBay for Charity, including tracking their donations and vetting new listings.
  • We also incur general costs associated with running a charity, such as audits, travel expenses and occasional legal advice.
  • You can learn more about our income and expenditure in our Annual Reports, published in the About Us section of this website.
  • Items sold by charities on eBay

  • We make no deduction from any listings made by Charity Direct Sellers (items sold by charities themselves), and do not charge charities any fees for using eBay for Charity. eBay also waives its basic Insertion and Final Value fees for charities, making it extremely cost-effective for charities to sell items through eBay for Charity.
  • Cash donations via PayPal and other channels

  • For simple donations not connected with eBay transactions we make a deduction of 3.75% of the total amount given. These donations are easier for us to track and deliver, so we have made our processing cost as low as possible. There is no charge to the charities involved.
  • Give at Checkout donations

  • We make an all-inclusive deduction of 5% from donations made through eBay checkout. There are no additional deductions, such as processing charges or VAT, and no charge to the charities involved.
  • Donations from eBay sellers

  • When eBay sellers donate the proceeds of a sale, MissionFish's deduction is 9% (up to a maximum £100), and reflects the greater costs involved in tracking item sales, managing seller relationships, and ensuring compliance with complex government regulations. We do not charge any additional processing costs or VAT to buyers, sellers or charities. The seller receives a pro-rated discount on their eBay fees from the sale of the item.
  • Some sample donations related to eBay sales

  • Example #1: item sold by a charity
  • In this example the Charity Direct Seller earns £20.00 on the sale of a £20 item.
  • Since the item is sold by a charity, there is no charge from MissionFish, and eBay credits 100% of its basic selling fees back to the seller.
  • *Assumes a £0.25 Basic Insertion Fee for a starting price of £5.00.
  • **The charity may need to pay additional fees not calculated in this example such as PayPal, credit card fees, third-party auction houses, etc.
